In an era where radio caters to pop rap and commercialism, Oneriology is a breath of fresh air. It takes us back to what we really love about hip hop: stories depicted in clever and sophisticated rhymes that evoke a wide range of genuine emotions. “Oneirology” means the scientific study of dreams and is the fifth studio album released by Cunninglynguists. Prior to Oneriology, they had released four other studio albums. In 2001, they released their first album “Will Rap For Food”, which was quickly praised for their clever rhymes and consistently great production. They went on to release Southern Underground in 2003, A piece of Strange in 2006, and Dirty Acres in 2007. If you listen to underground hip hop, then you may already know that Cunninlynguists are truly gifted lyrical wordsmiths. They are a hip hop trio from Down South that consists of three members: Deacon the villain, Kno, and Natti. The group name plays off of the word cunnilingus, which in short, has nothing to do with words. Oneriology was produced by Kno and has featured artists Tonedeff and Big Krit on it as well. Oneirology boasts off a world of clever and genius word schemes. It is the type of album one can listen to straight through, from beginning to end. It is also an album that is so deeply invested in creativity that you must listen to it more than once to fully capture the artist’s full investment of talent and thought. One thing I truly love about this album is the level of consciousness in most of their songs. While the concept is about studying dreams, the irony is their songs are filled with a level of consciousness that would alarm anyone just “sleepwalking” through life. Cunninglynguists show they are conscious of individual demons that most people face and within the state of society as well. One song that is an epitome of their level of consciousness is “Get Ignorant”. It definitely talks about the complacency of ignorance in our society and shows us how ignorant society really is. The hook mocks the phrase “get ignorant”. That phrase is usually used when someone is about to act out. So in a way they are telling people to act out because of our level of ignorance and also because society is trying to keep us ignorant. In this song, the production is more aggressive than the rest of the album and the lyrics are in your face as well. Within Oneriology, the songs often builds up and the concept of Oneriology is depicted through Kno’s use of soft samples, pianos, dreamy pads, and guitars. We see this in a song called “Shattered Dreams”. Shattered Dreams is an example where the production and the song writing complement each other. It is a dreamy kind of sound mainly depicted by the guitar and the pads. It is a slower kind of song as Natti spits one verse comparing love to shattered dreams. “ Nowadays love is in the haze of a flashback, those who invest deeply need be getting their cash back, being in lust with love feels so dreamy, til it’s shattered in beautiful pieces scattered beneath me”. Being in lust with love is a powerful statement in the sense that people have an overwhelming desire to be in love for all the wrong reasons. This is just a preview of the lyricism throughout the whole album. The songs are unique and beautiful while telling stories of the heart. It is by far one of the best albums I have ever heard but still lacks the recognition it deserves. Great music is everywhere, but sometimes the best is the ones we hear of the least. So do yourself a favor and grab a copy of Oneriology. If you are skeptical about buying the whole cd, look up the song list and listen to them on Youtube. It is not an album where only one or two songs are good and the rest blows. Definitely not. It is an album that collectively touches the heart. It is beautiful on every level from production to lyricism. Oneriology consists of true hip hop and you hear it through their interludes, spoken word, stories, lyricism and their overall music. You will not be disappointed. Instead
It will leave you wondering why the radios are not playing great music like this.

1. Who are you?(Tell my music blog audience a little about your self. ie Where were you born? Where do you reside now?)

My name is Matt Ojeda Fry, I was born in Maryland and moved around the East Coast settling on the border of New York and New Jersey. At 7 years old my parents had a great opportunity open up for them, we decided to move out to Seattle. I would consider myself to be from the Pacific Northwest if I had to choose a region. Last fall I enrolled in Colorado College as a freshman, class of 2014.

2. Who are your influences? How did they influence you?

Eminem first turned me onto hip-hop in 4th grade. I had no idea what rap was, haha. I still wasn't super into it but it was definitely something different than what I normally listened to. A couple years later I got introduced to a band known as the Blue Scholars. These two have been my main inspiration since I first started writing rhymes and producing beats. They capture the essence of the Seattle scene really well with mellow beats and extraordinarily conscious lyrics...I don't think I've heard another group quite like them. In any case, the whole PNW scene is sort of like that. You can't always be a dumb rapper making up a new dance or spittin just for the entertainment, yadayamean?
I'm now developing my own style and hearing artists like Skrillex come out with some really cool new dubstep/electro tunes. There are also more psychedelic trip-hop artists like ESKMO and Pretty Lights that I've been diggin lately. You'll be hearing those influences in my upcoming instrumentals and self-produced songs.

3. Is Hip Hop Dead? If so, why? How has Hip Hop evolved? for better or for worse?

Hip-hop is just beginning...it's one of the youngest forms of music out there, it can't be dead. The radio may be dead but hell, I keep hearing great artists from my region every day on the radio that I haven't heard before. 90.3 KEXP shoutout!
I mean, look at the blog movement. We have artists like Macklemore, Chris Webby, J Cole, Mac Miller, XV, the collective Odd Future...man, I know I'm missing a lot of the names but my itunes must have doubled in the last 6 months due to the overwhelming volume of great music. There will always be the commercial element of music for the parties and the drunk folk who just enjoy a good dumb jam that you can boogie to. If you can't appreciate it and want to be a hater, that's your problem.

4. What is your main message? How should people view your music? What make you different from other artists?

I mostly tell the stories of my life and the lessons I've learned through a journey of sounds and lyrics. Some of my songs have a message of social change, of opening your mind to others. Other times I want to just say fuck it all, you fans are stupid as hell, I'm going to hate on people. I have a very two sided personality and it definitely shows. What makes me different is the fact I see YOU for who YOU are. I also see the "us" in the "me."

I have gone through the journey of drug abuse and crime and violence. I understand people. I don't judge. And I come from a middle class family that lives in a predominantly white, rich city. I see you.

5. What are you doing currently?

I have a couple different projects going on. As a rapper, I'm working with an artist known as Beyond Evolution (http://soundcloud.com/evolutionbeyond) on an EP to showcase his hip-hop production. On a long-term scale, I am working on a full-length studio album that I plan to release sometime before I leave college, haha. ETA is 2 years...but I will be releasing material intermittently on my soundcloud (http://soundcloud.com/thephilosofist). I am also trying to put together a mix of trip-hop/dubstep/electro instrumentals meant to rock faces off at parties.

6. What do you think the major problem that our current youth are facing today? What advice would you give them? (if any)

If you look at Egypt and Libya and the situation over there, the majority of protesters and rebels are between the ages of 18-25 (based on population demographics and my own research). We have the largest population out of any generation on our planet. Our problem that we have to face is how much power we have over the future. We have the control. Our thoughts, our desires, our styles and trends, and our new traditions will replace those of old. I believe the future will hold more than we can ever predict because the paradigm we live in now is shifting so rapidly. Be ready.

So, most of us who are not living in a cardboard box are very aware of the malicious attacks and disrespect Donald Trump is fueling towards the President of the United States, Barack Obama. I am very disappointed in Donald Trump for being the drive of hate and negative energy in society. As the country is crumbling right before our eyes, hate, anger, and negative energy is the last thing we need going around. I'm tired of people dividing the country over dumb things that don't matter. In the end, we all want the same things out of life. Most of us are in the same struggle together. One thing I have noticed in the past two years is the lack of respect and the high increasing level of disrespect towards President Obama. No other President has been ridiculed, criticized, persecuted in the public eye as much as President Obama. While President George W. Bush was destroying this country for 8 entire years, people really stood by this idiot as he brought us in two wars, spent all of our money on his rich friends, and cut programs heartlessly. Remember, President Bush vetoed almost every bill the democrats put forth. He was extremely unqualified to be President of the United States and his leadership is why the country is the way it is. Now when the country is in complete ruins, and we have an extremely intelligent and humble human being trying to put it back together, this is how we treat him. With complete disrespect. I'm glad President Obama is showing the world how stupid and ridiculous this is. People are losing their houses, medicaid, labor rights, and straight up their lives. Most Americans are drowning in debt and working over 40 hours a week at a mediocre job trying to make ends meet. College degrees devalued and the poor are exploited, while the rich get richer. Who cares about the President's college transcripts? He is elected for four years, if your not helping the cause then your against the cause. If your not doing something positive to help, then just remember your inaction alone already makes you a problem to the world.

The other day, I was listening to the radio while driving home from work, It was a hip hop/ r&b station that I listen to on a regular basis. While I was day dreaming about skydiving over the Sahara desert, I was caught off guard by the heavy electronic techno drums booming rapidly. I immediately checked my station thinking I was listening to the wrong station all along. Nope, I wasn't. I finished listening to the song and at the end of it, I heard the radio host say the name of the song. She then went on to mention that she is playing songs from playlists that her listeners have submitted to her. Instantly, I thought genius! What an amazing way to save the longevity of radio. Seriously think about what that could do for music and emergence of cultures. You will hear the songs that people hold dear to them. The songs that are on their tracklist for their soundtrack of life. People would hear a variety of music. Songs they never heard before. Artists they never heard before. Musical genres they never heard before. Almost every musician would have the opportunity to get their voice heard. Of course, the hosts would still screen the playlists and probably choose the most fitting ones for their station's interest. Gatekeepers would still exist because they have to.Regardless, that simple choice does extend the listener's freedom to engage in a radio station and the common love for it all, music. But just the simple idea of letting listeners choose the music they would like to listen to or share with the world is a big step in the right direction. Especially as opposed to hearing the same 10 songs in rotation all day. Maybe it is a suggestion the vast majority of listeners could take on by encouraging your local radio stations to play music submitted by the listeners themselves.
